A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
