Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in September and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of his transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which included plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
