Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
